Shortcodes have been part of the WordPress API (Application Programming Interface) since version 2.5 (currently 2.7) and can make a bloggers life much easier!
In order to know how to use WordPress shortcodes you do need to have some understanding of PHP coding, but having an understanding of PHP will enable to you get more from your WordPress installation and take even more control of your WordPress theme.
Smashing Magazine has collected together a number of simple and advanced shortcodes which can be copied and used on your own blog. Some of the shortcodes available range from the very simple example of the “Hello, world” function, to the much more fucntional and useful create a “send to Twitter” button and how to incorporate an RSS feed into a post (tried this one already and it works a treat – although the CSS needs amending to make it look a bit neater). Altogether there are 10 shortcodes which can be copied and pasted into your own blog.
Bear in mind that most plugins use shortcodes to function so by following some of the tutorials available at Smashing Magazine, you will be able to take more control of your blog and learn a bit about coding at the same time.
