Matt Cutts video – preventing virtual blight

by Stephen on January 13, 2009

The first thing you are probably asking yourself is “what is virtual blight?” – I did too.

The simple answer is that it is all of those things that people do to try to screw your site to get links – post spam comments, create user pages with spam links or server hacks where malicious code is placed within your legitimate code.

There are all sorts of ways for hackers and spammers to exploit holes in your server or website code. Being aware of those holes is the best way to combat hacking or spamming attempts.

Matt Cutts (of Google) has recreated a talk he gave at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco in November 2008 and made it available at his blog and on the official Google Webmaster Central blog.

It is essential viewing for all bloggers and webmasters and provides an insight into the methods used by people from the dark side. It also provides some solutions and advice on what you can do to protect yourself from these kind of attacks.
