Google rolling out new real-time search feature

by Stephen on December 8, 2009

Google is in the process of rolling out it’s new real-time search feature; an enhancement it has been trying to incorporate for some time.
The “latest results” window appears on the search results page and includes results from Twitter and other pages the Googlebot has indexed within the past few minutes. This feature is not [...]

People who have just a smidgen of knowledge of SEO (search engine optimisation) have long debunked the assumption that the META KEYWORDS tag offers any value to search engine rankings. In the olden days this wasn’t the case, but now Google has officially announced that it no longer uses the content of the keywords tag [...]

For quite some time I held the viewpoint that the length of time for which a domain name is registered does help a website or blog achieve higher search rankings, particulalry on Google. In my mind I have often tried to trace the origins of this thought and, after performing a few searches, I [...]

AltSearchEngines is sending out a general request asking people to use a search engine other than one of the top three (Google, MSN and Yahoo!) on Wednesday 1 April.
AltSearchEngines says it is not anti Google, just pro alternative search engines.
Sounds like a good enough reason to try one of the smaller search engines, but will [...]

Google is now including longer, more detailed descriptions on its search results pages for search phrases that include three or more words. The idea is to show the words which have been searched for in more context and allow the searcher to make a more informed decision about which link to follow.

Twitter and the world of search

by Stephen on February 23, 2009

If you are fairly new to Twitter you could be forgiven for being unaware of its search function. Bizarrely, the link to the search area is placed at the bottom of the page with all the legal and development stuff. Maybe this is an intentional move; allowing nosey parkers to try out the search system [...]

Should I submit my website to search engines?

by Stephen on December 15, 2008

The short answer to this question is no.
There is no need for you to submit your website to any search engine. They will find your website by following links from other pages on the internet. In reality, you don’t need to submit your website to any search engine. This is because there are websites which [...]

Following on from a previous post about focusing on a specific task, I would like to mention an automated system provided by Google which I find almost as useful as RSS feeds. It’s called Google Alerts.
You will need to have a Google account to use the Alerts system. Once you have that you can login [...]

by Stephen on October 3, 2008

Google has today announced a new blog search website.
Take from the original post:
Adapting some of the technology pioneered by Google News, we’re now showing categories on the left side of the website and organizing the blog posts within those categories into clusters, which are groupings of posts about the same story or event. Grouping them [...]

In honour of it’s 10th birthday, Google has released the oldest version of it’s index for us to play with. The index is from 2001 and is the oldest version available.
It gives a fascinating insight into the state of things back then. The home page proudly proclaims “Search 1,326,920,000 web pages”. I never noticed when [...]

How Long Did Your Google Reinclusion Process Take?

by Stephen on September 24, 2008

Most SEO companies out there have been involved in submitting and waiting on at least one reinclusion or reconsideration request with Google. Not to say that you had a client that was penalized by Google but maybe you had a new client that switch to you after being penalized and you had to ‘clean up the mess.’ How long did it take you to get reincluded after submitting the reconsideration request with Google? If you submitted several of these requests and each took a different amount of time, do let us know. Here is a poll that I hope fills most possible answers. Please round to the nearest number and select all that apply: Forum discussion at WebmasterWorld . …

by Stephen on July 12, 2008

The robots.txt file is a very powerful tool to use for the purpose of SEO, but if used incorrectly it can lead to your website being completely ignored by search engines!
The robots.txt file tells a search engine spider which directories on a server it can crawl. These directories will then be added to the search [...]
